Many of us have big aspirations that we want to accomplish, but at the same time we put this off. We push the beginning date back further and further until it’s too late. The best time to start planning for the future, to start becoming a college athlete, to do anything, is right now.
Seth Godin (one of the leading marketers) explains to us that the best time to start looking for a job is now. This is true especially if you’re in a position you feel comfortable at. If something happens, such as an athletic injury that prevents you from playing any longer, you can be in a really difficult spot. When we start planning and working towards our goals years ahead of time, we’ll be much more likely to accomplish them.
Think of it this way, who has a better chance at becoming a college or professional athlete, the average player who starts training seriously their senior year or the average player who starts training their freshman year? This ties directly into my previous post about having a plan for the big picture. When we have a plan, potential setbacks and unforseen problems turn out to not really matter. If an athlete gets hurt during their senior year of college en route to the pros, they’re in a much better position if they already have a backup plan.
The ideas of becoming a pro, planning for unforseen problems, etc, don’t mean anything if you don’t start now. Once you realize the true power that today has, and use that to your advantage, you’ll be a lot closer to accomplishing your dreams than others who wait.
